Description:
Forskolin, a naturally occurring diterpene from the Indian plant Coleus foskohlii, activates adenylate cyclase, and thus increases the intracellular cAMP concentration. The second messenger cAMP activates cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA or cAPK) and controls many cellular mechanisms such as gene transcription, ion transport and protein phosphorylation. Purity is determined by HPLC and TLC.
Forskolin has multiple sites of action and should be used with caution. Forskolin derivatives have been developed for use in cardiovascular conditions, forskolin also exerts activity on inflammatory mediators, including interleukins and histamine, and on calcium ion influx, leading to its evaluation in asthma and antithrombotic effect.
